Sea To The Green
An Update of the East Avenue Neighborhood Association ______________________________________________________________________
Last meeting: EANA met on Sunday, July 28 at 12 Noon at 20 Raymond Terrace
Attendees: Laurel Lindstrom (president), Tony Rossi (Raymond Terrace), Bob Duff (State Rep for District 137)
Actions update since June 23 meeting
| Sea To The Green newsletter to be printed quarterly starting with September in addition to the monthly Sea To The Green updates | |
| Residents spoke at Public Works committee public hearing about the Second Street law enforcement vs. access to the harbor controversy. EANA opposes restricting access to the water for boaters. Police enforcement must be increased to keep late night parkers from causing a disturbance. | |
| Corporation Counsel contacted by EANA on July 2 to look into the variance for nonconforming use that was granted for 89B Strawberry Hill Avenue | |
| The Planning Commission, after two public hearings where EANA members spoke in favor of establishing a Village District on East Avenue, voted July 9 against it on East Avenue -- but voted for a Village District on Rowayton Avenue. The issue is not dead for East Avenue since there will soon be new commissioners on the Planning Commission -- and the Council, Mayor and Zoning Commission support a Village District designation for East Avenue. | |
| Mill Pond continues to receive attention regarding recent increased odor. DEP contacted by city. EANA present at meeting of Water Quality Committee on July 15 when issue discussed. Combination of low tides and dry weather probable cause of increase algae that resulted in the odor. Further tests and monitoring will take place. | |
| City Scan project introduced at a meeting on July 15 at city hall chaired by Mayor Knopp. EANA president participated with other leaders of neighborhood organizations. EANA will participate in program. | |
| Mayor's Wall Street Forum on July 24 brought together the people that can breath life into this area. EANA will provide suggestions/ideas since the public will be given ample opportunity to participate in the planning process. |
Key items discussed at July 28 meeting
| Low turnout at meeting secondary to summer season vacations and activity conflicts | |
| Bob Duff offered to assist EANA as needed | |
| Bob Duff talked about a recent trip he had made with Sgt. LePak of the NPD in his patrol car on a ride-along | |
| Bob Duff suggested contacting Chief Rilling re the drug activity and other problem activities at Cove and Second | |
| Various zoning violations in neighborhood discussed -- and the status of complaints to the city departments | |
| City out-to-bid for speed bumps currently. Eight streets scheduled to receive speed bumps this fall. Myrtle Street is to be repaved in 2003 so will get speed bumps at that time rather than this year | |
| September newsletter planned | |
| Plans for written mission statement | |
| Illegal message on sign at old Hojo sight that the city had ordered a cease and desist on is gone | |
| Zoning Department says Allstate sign at East Avenue and Myrtle is not illegal but agrees that it doesn't fit in with the character of the neighborhood | |
| Village district update. Bob Duff in agreement that East Avenue should receive designation -- and include an area south of the I-95 | |
| 89B Strawberry Hill update | |
| City Scan update. EANA president plans to contact EANA street reps to supply info re their individual streets that need attention from the city. CPEC rep will be contacted by EANA to then program the palm pilot for our particular neighborhood. CPEC will then arrange a day to go out with EANA members to take digital photos of the problems identified. |
